A Fleeting Wish

Posted on 22. Jan, 2010 by Luke Niforatos in Poetry/Lit.

It is my desire to gaze at the stars, just once.
Whether by lying in a bed made of powdery snow,
Or running my hands over tickling, gentle blades of grass.
Have you ever truly, actually seen the stars?
In all their pure, unadulterated beauty?

Or searched the Milky Way for life’s meaning?
Have you sought to quench your thirst
From the magnificent dipper? Or its smaller twin?
How about the mighty Orion’s belt?
Is there anything that you’ve felt?

    The truth is this:
Life is taking away those moments we could spend watching,
    Waiting, learning, listening.
The thieving swirl of city lights-
    Time, oh that enslaving commodity-
    These things have robbed us,
    And the world,
Of those events we were meant to cherish.
Nature is God’s canvas for us,
    His only audience.

    The tremendous charge of energy,
Contained in a single strike of lightning.
The vivacity of morning’s first rays,
And the subsequent ambience of day’s last breath.
The mindful presence and dreamy whisper
Of the infinite and boundless wind.
Have you ever listened to the wind?

Yes, I’d like to look at the stars.
I’d like to reach for the stars.
I’d like to feel life’s energy,
And let the love and beauty,
    Created only by our Creator,
    Fill me to the brim.

If only for a fleeting second,
    This is my fleeting wish.
